Dawn Jani Birley

Coming from a third generation Deaf family in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, Dawn Jani Birley was born an athlete and spent most of her childhood playing different sports, especially Taekwondo.

Birley was on the Canadian Taekwondo National team from 1993 to 1999 training and competing all over the world. As a junior aged 15, she ranked number one in the world and number five in the senior category. When Taekwondo became an official Olympic sport, she was selected to represent Canada in Sydney but a serious illness obligated her to abandon her dreams.

A recipient of many prestigious awards and recognition, ICSD awarded her the Sportswoman of the Year in 1996. Dawn Jani is currently working as a professional actor and a media host for different organisations.

She is well known for investigating the Deaflympics fiasco in Slovakia in 2011 as well as covering sports news for ICSD from 2015 to 2017. Her passion is a life balance between sports and arts as well as ensuring equal representation for Deaf women in sports.
